Somethings Cooking at Cedarville University Theater’s Spitfire Grill

Something I have in common with my siblings-in-law is our love for theater, especially my brother-in-law, Byron.  Most of my conversations with Byron either in person or on the phone always somehow circle back to theater.  I first saw Byron as Daddy Warbucks in Annie a few years ago and he did a phenomenal job and since then has become quite the actor.  He’s currently a sophomore at Cedarville University in Ohio and luckily he hasn’t placed his talents on the back burner since he started pursuing his engineering degree.  In his first year at Cedarville, he has stared as Aissa the Dragoman in “Appointment With Death” and Joe Sutter in “The Spitfire Grill”.

Tyler and I had the privilege to visit Cedarville a couple of weekends ago and see two performances of “The Spitfire Grill” and watch Byron shine!  Little did we know we left Wisconsin to drive to Ohio to see a play that took place in none other than Wisconsin, go figure.

The seven students who stared in this production did a great job and all had very distinct and unique talents.  For a group of kids who (all but one) have majors that are not theater it was incredibly impressive how much time the devoted to rehearsing for and performing “The Spitfire Grill”.

In addition to the 7 talented actors, there was a live pit orchestra for this show with untraditional instruments for a pit such as an accordion, guitar, violin, and string bass which added a ton to the overall production.

For a small school with a small theater program, production value was not lacking whatsoever from the orchestra, stage and technical crews, set design, or the acting.  I’d love to tell you to go check this show out but the run was from April 4 – 14 so it’s over now.  However, if you are passing through Ohio I’d definitely recommend looking up Cedarville University Theater and seeing if they have any shows running.  I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with what you will find!  Plus, Cedarville is a cute little town and the home of Labor Day, who knew!

Major kudos to this cast of 7, especially my brother Byron!  We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see who you will play next!
